Are we still being Sanctified ,washed and cleansed by Christ ?(Explaining Ephesians 5:26)

Ephesians 5:26 KJV
[26] That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

We must have heard this text taught as an on going work of Christ ,as we hear the word we are washed and sanctified and cleansed

Is this true ?

Let’s allow scriptures interpret itself

Is Jesus still sanctifying ,washing and cleansing His body ?

John 17:17 KJV
[17] Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
He said this before his death

His word is the gospel,Jesus’s death and ascension .God honored his request

Just like earlier on

John 15:3 KJV
[3] Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

The word is spoke was about his death and resurrection.

Acts 20:32 KJV
[32] And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.

Acts 26:18 KJV
[18] To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

Faith in the gospel means you are sanctified

Romans 15:16 KJV
[16] That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost.

Faith in The gospel means sanctified by the Holy Ghost .

1 Corinthians 1:2 KJV
[2] Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:

1 Corinthians 6:11 KJV
[11] And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 KJV
[23] And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

It’s no prayer .Separate the verse intelligently
He sanctifies you wholly. The term “I pray “is italics ,puts a lie to all Christ has done if allowed there .Its no prayer point .

It’s His work .
The next phrase is preserved ,not sanctified.
This is why he says ,He will do .
Keep what is He has done .Preserve the sanctified work.

Just like this

Philippians 1:6 KJV
[6] Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

He began the good work ,He will keep it so till the day .Reaffirming the eternal nature of His work

Hebrews 2:11 KJV
[11] For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,

Hebrews 10:10,14 KJV
[10] By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all
. [14] For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

Once and for ever

Any other use of this word is what we do ,not what he repeats or does again

For example

1 Corinthians 7:14 KJV
[14] For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.

This is not salvation ,

2 Timothy 2:21 KJV
[21] If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.

Nor this ,this is service

1 Peter 3:15 KJV
[15] But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

And this

Notice, the actors in these texts refer in no way to Christ .

So why use ” that he might sanctify ” in Ephesians 5:26
The pretext should help

Ephesians 5:23-25 KJV
[23] For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
[24] Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
25] Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

Saviour.not to save
Church is subject not will be subject
Loved and gave .past tense

So verse 26, is why he loved and gave himself

So the resultant effect is a sanctified, cleansed and washed church !
Hence better translations have it in the right tense ,Past .

We are cleansed .

The word here means to purify .

Acts 10:15 KJV
[15] And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

Peter was told this

Acts 15:9 KJV
[9] And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

By faith in the gospel

Titus 2:14 KJV
[14] Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

Similar words ,He gave to purify,it’s His work that purifies. His sacrifice

Hebrews 9:14 KJV
[14] How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

His blood .

1 John 1:7,9 KJV
[7] But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
9] If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Again ,it’s His blood .

Any other use of this word where it appears in the present tense is our work not His

2 Corinthians 7:1 KJV
[1] Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

With His promises ,His promises are what He does ,not our work

2 Corinthians 6:17-18 KJV
[17] Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing ; and I will receive you,
[18] And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

That’s the promise .We are sons already .
We come out by faith in the gospel

James 4:8 KJV
[8] Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

James uses it for doubt .The double minded .

It’s not God who does this nor His and our Christ.

He has washed us

Titus 3:5 KJV
[5] Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

So,the Term ” by the Word ” in Ephesians 5:26 means on account of ,it’s the term logos. Used for speech ,action taken account of ,or by record .
Washing of water by The account of His love ,which is His giving himself .

The fruit of it are then explained

Ephesians 5:27 KJV
[27] That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

Glorious church ,that’s what you get when Christ washes .

No spot or wrinkle

Stains can’t be found when a man is washed by His blood

Ephesians 1:4 KJV
[4] According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

Without blame or defect

Haven cleansed us ,we are holy ,without spot or wrinkle

Ephesians 5:30 KJV
[30] For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

We are already His body .

So,Ephesians 5:26 isn’t present continuous

It’s done

See it as a mirror and honor the Father in His Son

Hope it’s clear

Let me know
